Leading Lake District hotels on the market

TWO of the Lake District’s most prestigious hotels have been put up for sale following the collapse of their former parent company.

Agents Christie & Co have been appointed by the administrators of von Essen Hotels, which owns the Samling and the Sharrow Bay hotels, to sell all of the company’s suite of 26 country house hotels.

The Samling Hotel is an 11-room hotel set in seven acres of grounds overlooking Lake Windermere, while Sharrow Bay has 24 rooms overlooking Ullswater. Both hotels have restaurants which earned a Michelin Star in the 2011 guide.

Christie said that the opportunity to own some of the unique properties within the von Essen portfolio may not be repeated for generations, and that it expects “intense” interest in the estate both from buyers in the UK and overseas.

Chris Day, managing director of Christie + Co, said: “This collection of fine country house hotels offers a unique opportunity as a whole group or in parts to be added to similar hotel estates.

“Given the history and international reputation of these hotels we anticipate considerable interest from potential buyers who have already been in contact to try and secure some or all of this famous collection of hotels.”
