Developer sought for £25m hospital transformation

A DEVELOPER is being sought that can turn the former Royal Eye Hospital in Manchester into a centre for research and innovation.
A tender document has been published which value the contract at £15-25m. The plan is to turn the Grade II listed building into a 10,000 sq m home for bio and medical technology companies.
The work should start in August next year and be completed by spring 2012.
Corridor Manchester, the public body handling the tender, said it is already in “detailed discussions” with a global clinical trial company keen to take space at the new location.
It is also in negotiations to create a new training facility for Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Jackie Potter, Corridor Manchester’s chief executive, said: “The former Royal Eye Hospital is a great development opportunity where we intend to provide the modern business space that is much needed for companies wanting to locate in the Corridor area, and who wish to take advantage of the large network of health, science, medical innovation and technology companies already located here.”
The Royal Eye Hospital site is owned by the NHS trust, which is one of the partners of Corridor Manchester, the organisation set up to drive economic growth and regeneration along the Oxford Road area of the city.
