Edge Hill plans £30m sports complex

EDGE Hill University has submitted a planning application to extend its campus at Ormskirk to include a new landmark £30m sports complex.

The university is planning to a new sports and recreation facility for use both by students and the wider community at the eastern end of its campus. This would include an eight-court indoor sports hall and 25m swimming pool within a new building surrounded by natural and synthetic playing pitches, games courts, an  athletics track and car parking.

The application has been submitted to West Lancashire Borough Council by the Manchester office of planning consultancy Turley Associates.

Steve Igoe, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Resources) of Edge Hill University, said:

“This investment in the Ormskirk campus will ensure the University continues to enhance and develop all aspects of the student experience, particularly the quality of the campus.

“The project will also maintain and further the University’s reputation as a leading provider of sport and physical activity-related degree programmes.”

David Diggle, associate director in the Manchester office of Turley Associates, said: “This application is made following a two-year consultation with key stakeholders and the local community and will continue to ensure the university remains one of the best in the region.”

West Lancashire Borough Council is expected to deliver its decision in early autumn. The university, which has more than 24,000 students, hopes that work on the complex will begin in 2012 and be completed by 2013.
