Cumbria seeks contractors to build £5.5m skills centre

CUMBRIA County Council has issued a tender for a contractor to build the proposed new Energy Coast Construction Skill Centre at Lilyhall in West Cumbria.

The centre, which is to be built on land next to the existing Lakes College, is being built to provide trainees from surrounding West Cumbrian towns such as Whitehaven and Workington, which have high levels of deprivation.

A tender document issued by the council states: “One of the key aims of the Britain’s energy coast is to support the development of an integrated education and training facilities building upon a collaborative hub and spoke model where training and education may be provided by a number of independent providers working in partnership.”

It added that the centre would be used to train people in skills needed to deliver low carbon and renewable energy technologies and that courses would be tailored to meet local employment needs.

Contractors looking to bid for the work must submit a tender by August 8.
