A planning application to bring much-needed new homes to the Tyldesley area of Wigan has been given the final seal of approval.

Wigan Council’s planning committee approved the reserved matters application from Redrow Homes to build 81 homes on agricultural land east of Coldahurst Farm.

The site is currently in private ownership and primarily used for agricultural activities.

The development will be a mixture of detached, semi-detached and terraced properties. There will be 20 two-bedroom homes, 19 three-bedroom homes and 42 four-bedroom homes offering a range of accommodation for individuals or small and large families.

The development also includes significant areas of open space, a pond and new landscaping design. There are a number of trees located on the site which have Tree Preservation Orders and will be incorporated into the gardens of the properties.

The council’s planning committee also approved an outline planning application to build 84 homes on vacant land in Hindley Green.

The application, by Persimmon Homes, was originally for 124 homes on land south of 147 Alder Lane but the number of homes has been reduced after negotiations with planning officers.

The site was earmarked for industrial development and is currently overgrown and not used.

This development will bring the land back into use and provide a range of much-needed homes in the area.

It will be a mixture of one, two, three and four-bedroom homes with 25 per cent affordable housing. Section 106 contributions from the developer will also be spent in the local community.

Approval of reserved matters will now need to be submitted.

Cllr David Molyneux, cabinet member for regeneration, said: “It is vital that we support appropriate housing development to keep up with the need for housing and to support growth in our local economy.

“It’s also important we provide a variety of homes for our existing residents and also to attract people to our borough.

“Good quality new housing along with improved transport links and employment opportunities provides the right mix to keep our local economy growing.”
