Region’s business and political figures recognised in New Year Honours

The New Year Honours List has recognised a host of leading names from across the region’s business, education, political and public sectors.

University of Liverpool vice-chancellor Prof Janet Beer becomes a dame, as does Jackie Daniel, chief executive of University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust.

The Beatles drummer Ringo Starr and Bee Gees’ Barry Gibb, who was raised in Manchester, receive knighthoods.

There are knighthoods for three North West politicians – Altrincham and Sale MP Graham Brady, Preston MP Mark Hendrick and Chorley MP Lindsay Hoyle. Edward Timpson, who was MP for Crewe and Nantwich for nine years before losing his seat by 48 votes in the 2017 general election, is given a CBE.

Business leaders from across the region were recognised, despite a relative lack of honours to business people in this year’s list.

Magnetic North chief executive Lou Cordwell receives an OBE and Nigel Mills, co-founder and chairman of The Lakes Distillery in Cumbria, receives a CBE.

There are MBEs awarded to Yumsh Snacks chief executive Antony Goodman, Swiscot Group managing director Vikas Shah and Class of Your Own chief executive Alison Watson. National Nuclear Laboratory’s director of external relations, Adrian Bull, also receives an MBE.

Prof Caroline Dive, professor of cancer pharmacology and deputy director, Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute, receives a CBE for services to cancer research.

Former barrister Nadine Daniel, who is now inter faith advisor at the Anglican Diocese of Liverpool, has received a British Empire Medal, as has Liverpool City Council’s troubled families lead Gail Porter.
