Restoration of landmark Liverpool building completes

The £2.2m restoration project of the external elevations of the Grade II listed Tower Building in Liverpool has been completed.

Built in 1908, the iconic Tower Building was designed by local architect Walter Aubrey Thomas, who also designed four notable buildings in Liverpool, including the neighbouring Royal Liver Building.

The historic Tower Building was originally built as a seven-storey office block, but was converted in 2006 into 73 apartments, with the three lower floors retained for commercial and retail use. Last year RBH converted the first and second floors into apartments.

Acting on behalf of RBH Properties, the project, led by CBRE director Simon Hepple supported by specialist conservation building surveyor Dylan Evans for the building consultancy team at CBRE Liverpool, took 22 months to complete.

Works to the building included sympathetic replacement of irreparable faience cladding, faience repairs, re-pointing, specialist timber sash window repairs and replacement of roof coverings across 14 individual roofs.

Hepple said: “The project proved challenging at times as materials such as Faience were difficult to source and lengthy to manufacture. In addition, we worked hard to ensure all residents could remain in-situ while the works were being carried out. We are delighted to see the building now restored to its former glory.”
