Salford student village to be transformed

The site of the former Castle Irwell student village in Salford could be transformed if plans are approved, creating homes, jobs and boosting the local economy.

And planners are keen to hear the views of residents on the final shape of the scheme.

A planning application is currently being prepared to redevelop the site, which is owned by the University of Salford, by building up to 500 new high-quality family homes, a number of riverfront apartments, and retail space.

Under the plans, land will also be set aside for a new primary school and changing facilities for new playing fields on site.

More than 100 retail jobs could be created, potentially adding up to almost £5m a year to the economy.

The new shops could generate around £140,000 a year in business rates, which Salford City Council could use to support services.

Euan Kellie, director at Euan Kellie Property Solutions, said: “We are excited to bring forward plans to redevelop Castle Irwell, a site with a rich local history and close to many people’s hearts. Our plans will provide family homes and new shops for the local area, as well as a new primary school that will help address known capacity challenges across the city.

“Before we submit our plans to Salford City Council, we want to hear the views of local people, which will be fed into our final proposals.”

A public consultation has been launched to hear the views of local residents. A drop-in exhibition will take place at The Beacon Centre, London Street, Salford on Monday,  March 26, from 2pm to 7pm.
