Major delays across the Manchester area following fatal accident on M60

Accident on M67

There were major delays across the Manchester area this morning following a fatal multi-car accident on the M60 motorway.

The accident took place around 4am in the morning between Junction 19 and Junction 18 of the M60.

Four lanes of the motorway were closed on the anti-clockwise side of the carriageway and diversions were in place. Traffic officials say the diversions were likely to stay in place until 11am.

It later emerged that one man died and two others were taken to hospital with serious injuries following the accident.

Shortly after 3:35am, police were called to the motorway to reports of a three car collision that had taken place between junctions 18 and 19.

Officers attended and a man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two other men were taken to hospital for treatment, one with a critical head injury and one with other serious injuries.

Sergeant Danny Byrne, of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “First and foremost I would like to extend my sincere condolences to the family of the man who tragically died this morning.

“This is a devastating time for them and we are working to provide them with support from specially trained officers.

“We are going to be conducting enquiries at the scene for some time this morning and the anti-clockwise carriageway remains closed so I would advise motorists to avoid the area as much as possible.

“I would also ask that anybody with information about the collision contacts the SCIU.”

There are currently major roadworks taking place in the area which are due to end this summer as part of the upgrade of the M60 to a smart motorway.

The motorway reopened around 11am.
