Planning permission granted for Stockport care home extension

Borough Care has been given the go-ahead to extend its Bruce Lodge residential home for older people in Offerton, Stockport.

Permission has been granted for a new wing to be added to the existing building.

The two-storey extension will provide 18 new bedrooms and a social dining space.

The new bedrooms will be modern, spacious and have en-suite facilities.

Bruce Lodge currently provides accommodation and support for 47 older people living with dementia and other mental health conditions.

The building is a purpose-built dementia care home with wide corridors, a light, airy interior and secure enclosed garden.

Dr Mark Ward, chief executive at Borough Care, said: “At a time of ever-increasing pressure on hospital and care home beds, this is a significant investment we are making to boost the number available for people in Stockport.

“As people are living longer, and the number with dementia increases, demand will continue to rise in future years and we need to plan for this.”

The new wing will be based on a ‘household model’, which is increasingly being adopted by care homes.

As the ‘household’ name implies, residents live in smaller groups rather than everyone occupying the same space.

This replaces what can be seen as an institutional setting, which is often associated with long term care.

Living in smaller groups creates a calmer environment and makes it easier for people to cope, especially if they have dementia.
