Work due to start on transforming historic Chester landmark into new homes

Chester Shot Tower

Revised plans for the stunning transformation of Chester Shot Tower have been granted planning permission.

The redevelopment of Chester’s historic 18th century shot tower and former lead-works site has been delayed and the approval will now ensure the ambitious project can finally get under way.

Before the current developer got involved earlier designs which included grey zinc cladding proved unpopular with local people.

Chester’s lead works were established in the late 18th century to manufacture shot for British muskets during the Napoleonic Wars.

Shot manufacture continued on the site until 1986 but the site has been left standing empty for more than 15 years.

The new scheme will include a mix of industrial and contemporary architecture and include 54-one and two-bedroom apartments, 15-two and three-bedroom duplex apartments and three spectacular four-bedroom townhouses.

David Giovanni, managing director at Whitecroft Group, said: “After listening to feedback from local stakeholders, we’re incredibly happy with the new plans.

“We really wanted to be sympathetic to the heritage of the site whilst ensuring that it met the needs of modern homeowners, with open-plan living and contemporary features.

“The scale of this project is extraordinary and there is nothing else in Chester of this prominence or quality. We’ve already had an influx of enquiries for the 3 four-bedroom townhouses which will be sensational.”

The development will significantly transform the former manufacturing site, positioned opposite the multi-million-pound, RIBA nominated Waitrose.

The tower will undergo extensive repair work to restore and future-proof the structure, whilst over £15,000 will be spent on a new home for protected Peregrine Falcons.

The latest visuals from Whitecroft Group incorporates a red brick construction to complement the Grade II* listed tower, coupled with a striking grey aluminium outer face to the east and a warm copper coloured metal to the west.

Mr Giovanni said: “We really want to set a clear benchmark in design for upcoming developments in the city. Everything from the build quality and aesthetics, to internal layout and functionality, has been carefully planned to ensure these homes are phenomenal.

“This is a landmark site for Chester and a stand-out development for us. We’re excited to see the project to completion.”

Demolition and various enabling works have already been undertaken. Construction is expected to commence in the next few weeks.
