The undignified row which has consumed logistics firm Stobart Group took a bizarre twist this weekend.

Popstar Ronan Keating stepped in to make an unexpected contribution to the very public row over the weekend.

The former Boyzone singer has thrown his weight behind former chief executive Anndrew Tinkler who he described as a friend.

Tinkler has been sacked from the board of the firm, which has its headquarters in Carlisle.

The board have also threatened to take legal action against Mr Tinkler.

He responded by threatening to sue his former fellow board members for libel.

The former chief executive has moved to oust the current chairman Iain Ferguson and replace him with retail entrepreneur Philip Day.

The attempted has sparked a very public war of words with no sign of a truce being called any time soon.

Ronan Keating’s unexpected declaration of support followed a statement by William Stobart, the son of the founder of the trucking empire, criticising Ferguson and the chief executive Warwick Brady for their ‘vindictive campaign’ against Tinkler.

The singer took to Twitter to declare his allegiance.

He said: “Absolutely disgraceful what they are saying about our friend @Andrew_Tinkler.

“The company would not be where it is without him. Love this article. Well done William Stobart.”

The Stobart Group has donated thousands of pounds to a charity set up by Keating.

Fund manager M&G is trying to put together a last-minute peace deal at Stobart Group with city heavyweight Allan Leighton in the chair.

The whole row is expected to come to a head later this month at Stobart Group’s annual general meeting in Guernsey.
