Companies celebrate Queen’s Award for Enterprise success
Following its success in this year’s Queen’s Award for Enterprise, Bromborough-based Smylie marked an official Grant of Acceptance ceremony with the Lord-Lieutenant of Merseyside, Mark Blundell.
Family-owned international export business Smylie was awarded the International Trade accolade for a second time in April this year.
The Lord Lieutenant presented the award to Smylie managing director Chris Smylie, who said: “It is a great honour to be receiving the Queens Award for a second time in four years and we are delighted that our hard work and success has been recognised once again.
“We have a great team and without all their hard work and commitment this achievement would not be possible, but we have to keep looking at ways to improve our business and stay one step ahead of the competition.
“The future looks bright for Smylie Ltd and I am excited to to see how the business develops over the coming years.”
Smylie Ltd has grown and made major investments in the region of £500,000 through introducing new technology and processes which have added even greater efficiency to its distribution operation.
Mr Smylie addeed: “The business has gone from strength to strength and with the help of Wirral Chamber of Commerce and Wirral Council we have not looked back.”
Paula Basnett, Wirral Chamber of Commerce chief executive, said: “For many years Chris and his team has been supported by the Wirral Chamber of Commerce through our Export Documentation service, therefore, we are excited about the future trade growth of the business on a global scale.”
Cheshire consultancy business Boyds also celebrated its success in the same category, for outstanding short-term growth in overseas sales for the past three years, when it welcomed the Lord Lieutenant of Cheshire, David Briggs, to its Crewe base for the presentation.
Boyds supports the development of pharmaceutical and biotech products and devices for patient benefit.
Founder and chief executive, Prof Alan Boyd, said: “It is a great privilege to have a globally-recognised royal stamp of approval, particularly as around 60% of our revenue now comes from businesses based outside the UK.
“We have a clear vision moving forward to continue to use our knowledge and expertise to help our global clients to develop products for the benefit of patients.”
Boyds was established 13 years ago and now employs 20 members of staff and consultants working out of its offices in Cheshire and Cambridgeshire.
Working with small pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, as well as medical departments at universities, the team at Boyds helps to translate research ideas into medicines to treat human diseases.
The business provides a range of expertise and skills central to the development of these medicinal products.
