Football club part company with new general manager after just 24 hours

Stephen Jones

Chester Football Club has parted company with its new general manager after just one day.

Stephen Jones was unveiled last week at a City Fans United meeting and started work as general manager of the club at the start of the week.

But the reign of the 60-year-old came to an unexpected end just 24 hours later after the club were made aware of issues with his employment history.

The issues are said to be related to the mortgage industry.

Mr Jones was appointed to look after the day-to-day running of the National League North club as well as help grow its commercial activities.

He had previously worked in the hotel industry in the Chester area. He is also a former chairman of Prestatyn Town.

The day-to-day management had been carried out by club directors in recent months and the appointment was meant to be part of a general expansion.

The role for a general manager was initially advertised by the club in the summer.

A club statement read: “Chester Football Club can confirm that, following a number of issues that have come to the club’s attention over the past 24 hours, Stephen Jones has left employment with the club with immediate effect.

“As part of the recruitment process significant checks and due diligence were completed based on the information provided upon application.

“The issues however only came to light following his commencement in post and the club has acted swiftly once they came out to resolve these matters.

“We will be making no further comment on the matter.”
