M6 motorway is closed in Cheshire following six vehicle pile-up

The northbound side of the M6 motorway in Cheshire has been closed following the accident.

Emergency services were called to the scene near Crewe in Cheshire just before 12.30pm this lunchtime.

The northbound carriageway is closed between junction 16 for Stoke-on-Trent/Crewe and junction 17 for Sandbach/Crewe.

Police say it will remain shut for a couple of hours.

North West Motorway Police tweeted: “Multi vehicle RTC. Due to the diesel spillage the carriageway will need treating before we can open it as it is not safe for us to allow traffic to pass.

“It is anticipated it will remain closed for the next couple of hours. Please find an alternative route.”

There are long delays on both sides of the carriageway and motorists are being advised to avoid the area if at all possible.

Emergency crews are at the scene and one person is due to be taken to hospital.
