Heavy rain and flooding causing serious traffic problems in Manchester area

Heavy rain is causing serious traffic and transport problems in the south Manchester area.
Two lanes of the M60 have been closed to due flooding close to Stockport.
The closure on the clockwise side of M60 heading from the Sockport Pyramid junction J1 to J2 for Cheadle is causing delays of 30 minutes.
There is also heavy traffic on the anticlockwise stretch from the A34 Kingsway junction to junction 5 for Princess Parkway.

And the A555 Airport link road has been closed from the A5102 Woodford Road, in Bramhall, to the A35 Handforth Bypass due to flooding.
It is the second time in a week the road has closed due to flooding.
Meanwhile, two lanes are blocked on the M56 due to standing water causing traffic delays in the Wythenshawe area.

Stockport has been one of the worst affected areas and the council is advising motorists to avoid the area if possible.
There are a number of road closures in Hazel Grove.

All train services between Manchester and Crewe have been halted due to flooding on the train tracks.
And there are delays on the rail route between Manchester Piccadilly and the airport.
People flying from the airport this evening are being urged to check before they travel.

Virgin Trains West Coast, Transport for Wales, Northern and Cross Country services have all been affected.
Northern have also suspended services between Salford Crescent and Wigan Wallgate.
Heavy rain has caused flooding in the Hope Valley and East Midland train services are unable to run between Sheffield and Manchester.

Manchester fire and rescue service say they are having a busy day dealing with a number of incidents. They are warning drivers to steer clear of flooded roads.

Heavy showers are forecast for the rest of the afternoon and evening.
