Shoppers evacuated from Manchester Arndale after reports of stabbings

Shoppers have been evacuated from the Manchester Arndale following reports of stabbings in the shopping centre.

According to reports police have been called to reports of multiple injuries after stabbings in the shopping centre.

The police later said a man in his 40s has been arrested.

A statement said: “We are currently responding to an incident at the Arndale Shopping Centre in Manchester City Centre.

“Officers are in attendance and early enquiries suggest that several people have been stabbed.

“A man in his 40s has been arrested on suspicion of serious assault. He has been taken to custody for questioning.

“Enquiries remain ongoing.

“Anyone with information should call police on 101 quoting incident number 1055 of 11/10/2019, or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.”

The man was arrested after being Tasered by officers.

Shops on Market Street have also been evacated.

Large numbers of emergency workers are currently in the Exchange Square area of the city centre.

The area is popular with diners and is home to a number of bars and restaurants.

Reports suggest that a number of people have been stabbed.

It is not known at this stage if the attacks have resulted in any fatalities.

Trams are not operating at Exchange Square according to the city’s Metrolink.

North West Ambulance Service says four people are being treated outside the Arndale shopping centre and confirmed the callout was related to reports of a stabbing.

David Allinson, centre director at the Arndale, said: “A serious incident has taken place at Manchester Arndale this morning.

“The centre has been evacuated while police investigate the incident.

“We are unable to comment any further as the incident is currently being handled by Greater Manchester Police, who we will continue to support with their investigation.”
