Liverpool launches public consultation into further Anfield expansion
Club set to unveil plans to extend Anfield Road stand capacity

Liverpool FC has launched a public consultation exercise into its plans to extend its Anfield stadium capacity further.

The Reds aim to add extra seating capacity to its Anfield Road stand, which could take the ground’s overall capacity to beyond 60,000.

A new main stand extension, which opened in 2016, added a third tier as part of a £100m build, and increased Anfield’s overall capacity to 54,074.

However, the club is eager to add to that in a bid to compete with Premier League rivals Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham, who all have bigger ground capacities than the Reds.

More seats means more revenues which can swell transfer fund coffers in January and the Summer.

Previous plans to redevelop the stadium, with the proposed addition of almost 5,000 new seats, were allowed to lapse earlier this year in favour of more “ambitious” proposals.

Liverpool’s chief operating officer, Andy Hughes, said at the time: “The progress that has been made during ongoing feasibility studies has resulted in us being in a position to allow the outline planning permission to lapse.”

He said the club was committed to working with local residents and planning officials to “focus on the detail” behind any proposed redevelopment and consider “alternative options”.

The club is now preparing to reveal these new plans by opening a first stage of public consultation and share its ideas for expanding the Anfield Road Stand.

It said: “Our vision is to create a bigger Anfield which would allow more fans to watch some of Europe’s best football in a world-class facility in the heart of Liverpool.

“We invite you to a series of drop-ins to find out more about our progress so far. We want to hear from local residents, businesses and fans as we develop and shape our proposals.”

The club has distributed more than 5,000 leaflets to Anfield residents inviting them to the public consultation.

This first stage public consultation is planned to take place in The Kop Bar, Kop Stand, on: Friday, November 29, 4pm-8pm; Monday, December 2, 4pm-8pm; Tuesday, December 3, 12pm-4pm.

There will also be a pop-up information stand at Anfield Road on: Saturday, November 30, 12pm-3pm when Liverpool play Brighton; and on the day of the club’s derby with local rivals, Everton, on Wednesday, December 4, 5pm-8pm.

The club has also set up on online hub to enable supporters to view the new proposals and submit feedback via an online form.
