Slater Heelis solicitor Chris Partington has been announced as one of only 22 solicitors to become a Court of Protection Panel Guardian following the introduction of a new law.

The Guardianship (Missing Persons) Act 2017 or “Claudia’s Law”, named after missing chef Claudia Lawrence, was introduced to help control the affairs of people who have disappeared.

The exclusive panel, made up of lawyers from around the country, allows special legal status enabling guardians to control the affairs of those who have been missing for 90 days or longer and that have no immediate family.

Chris Partington, who is a partner at Slater Heelis, is now able to act in the best interest of a missing person by managing their property and finances when there is no next of kin.

Chris is head of the private client department and has more than 15 years’ experience in advising on all aspects of estate planning, wills, probate and the Court of Protection.

Chris Partington

He is also one of only 71 Court of Protection Panel Deputies in the country and a Professional Attorney acting on behalf of, or protecting, mentally incapacitated individuals.

Chris said; “Being appointed to the new panel is a huge privilege and I’m keen to support and work with the families and friends of individuals who are missing.

“Allowing a Panel Guardian control over the assets of a missing person is in their best interest and ensures everything is kept in order to avoid unnecessary debts and protect their financial position.

Chris Bishop, managing partner said: “It’s a huge achievement for Chris to be appointed as part of the new panel. Only a select few lawyers from across the country are chosen for this position so it’s a real accomplishment that Chris is one of them.”

Slater Heelis is a full-service law firm with offices in Manchester city centre, Sale and Timperley, acting for clients across the UK and internationally.
