A huge leisure £250m scheme which will create thousands of new jobs has been granted planning permission.

The scheme, close to the Trafford Centre, will include a thermal spa and treatment centre.

The Therme Manchester and Peel L&P wellbeing resort will replace the current EventCity events building in Trafford Park.

The events campus is being moved to the Soccerdome site.

The three-storey centre will include a water park with slides, a wave pool, indoor and outdoor pools, steam rooms, luxury spa experiences and a two acre wellbeing garden.

Therme Manchester announced the plans last summer and said they wanted to bring together “the tradition of the ancient Roman spa with an indoor tropical paradise”.

The centre will be the first of its kind in the UK.

Building work is expected to begin within weeks now full permission has been granted by Trafford Council.

Stelian Iacob, CEO of Therme Group UK, said: “Therme combines sustainable technology with nature and culture to benefit communities around the world.

“Manchester has always been a forward-thinking city, and we are excited about the possibility of Therme Manchester bringing well-being and affordable luxury to the heart of the community, shaping a city of the future.”

James Whittaker, Peel L&P Group development director, added: “Bringing Therme Manchester to TraffordCity is a once in a generation opportunity and these plans will deliver a world class well-being resort to the north of England, create a state-of-the-art events and conference facility as well as provide a permanent football facility for the local community.
