£31m canalside housing scheme in Leigh gets the go-ahead

Proposals for Waterside Point

Wigan Council has granted planning permission for a £31m canalside housing development in Leigh, Greater Manchester.

Warrington-based affordable housing provider, Your Housing Group, will build 226 homes with 113 for shared ownership and 113 for affordable rent.

The scheme, on West Bridgewater Street, and next to the Leeds Liverpool canal, comprises one-bed maisonettes, one- and two-bedroom apartments, and two- and three-bedroom houses, all of which will have off street parking and front and rear gardens.

Some houses will benefit from overlooking the canal.

The development, to be known as Waterside Point, will be designed and built by Wigan-based MCI Developments.

Richard Jones, director of growth at Your Housing Group, said: “It’s great to work with MCI Developments, a local contractor, to bring much-needed affordable homes to this part of Leigh, enabling local people to get on the property ladder.

“This is a large development, which will enhance the surrounding area, and will help breathe new life into this part of the town.

“Leigh is ideally located for commuting to surrounding towns and to the cities of Manchester and Liverpool.”

Alex Wood, regional managing director for MCI Developments, said: “MCI are delighted to be working with Your Housing Group on this scheme.

“We’re really looking forward to seeing the benefits the project will bring to Leigh town centre and at the same time providing much-needed affordable housing to the area.”

Your Housing Group is one of government housing agency Homes England’s strategic partners.

This development has been part-funded with a grant from the Shared Ownership and Affordable Homes Programme.
