OFT set to end probe into sports retail sector

THE OFFICE of Fair Trading is set to end an investigation into alleged anti-competitive conduct in the sports retail sector.
The OFT said it has “provisionally decided to close its investigation”, which was launched in September 2009 and sparked by Wigan-based retailer JJB Sports which took concerns over alleged cartel activity to the regulator.
At the time JJB said it had contacted the Office of Fair Trading to seek immunity from punishment after reporting “suspected agreement or concerted practice to dampen competition in the sports retail market”.
In a brief statement JJB said: “JJB notes this provisional decision and the OFT’s expectation that it will reach a final decision later in the year.
“As the leniency applicant, JJB has been co-operating fully with the OFT throughout its investigation, and will continue to do so. JJB is not in a position to comment on the reasons behind the OFT’s provisional decision.”
The company’s main rival, Sports Direct International welcomed the move.
Chairman Keith Hellawell said the decision: “is in line with Sports Direct’s long held views on the investigation. It is also consistent with previous decisions taken by other regulatory bodies.”
