Takeaway owner sentenced after admitting £71k of VAT fraud

A Manchester takeaway owner has been sentenced to two years in prison for £71,204-worth of VAT fraud.

The sentence, handed down at Manchester Crown Square Crown Court, was suspended for two years, and included 440 hours of unpaid work.

Irfan Khan, 38, of Burnage, pleaded guilty to the charge on May 29, 2020, and was back in court yesterday (June 25) for sentence.

Khan failed to register his kebab and pizza takeaway, Khan Kebab House, in Wilmslow Road, Withington, for VAT between 2012 and 2017.

Over five years, Khan cheated taxpayers out of £71,204.

A spokesperson for HMRC said: “Khan has stolen money from the public purse and cheated honest and law-abiding business owners who pay their taxes.
