Haulier announces ‘substantial contract’ with supermarkets group

Eddie Stobart

Logistics group Eddie Stobart has won a ‘substantial contract’ with retail group Wm Morrison Supermarkets.

GreenWhiteStar Acquisitions, which owns the Warrington-based transport group, announced the contract today.

The business will provide transportation services from two of Bradford-based Morrison distribution centres.

This contract is additional to the work that Eddie Stobart currently carries out on behalf of Morrisons.

The new three-year contract will see Eddie Stobart manage all transport planning and deliveries of chilled and ambient groceries from the two locations to Morrisons’ network of supermarkets.

William Stobart, executive chairman of GWSA, said: “This further enhances our existing relationship with Morrisons and is testament to our current performance.

“It is excellent news for Eddie Stobart and strengthens our position in the marketplace as the leading transport provider for the retail and consumer sectors.”

The haulier was rescued from collapse in a December 2019 takeover as part of a deal which provided a £55m loan and saved 6,500 jobs.

The firm was struggling to repay debts of more than £200m and its shares had been suspended since August after an accounting discrepancy was uncovered.

Earlier this month GreenWhiteStar Acquisitions, the acquisition vehicle involved in the rescue of Eddie Stobart, announced figures for the first six months of trading under the new ownership structure and new management team led by William Stobart and Brian Corrway.

It said it had traded successfully throughout the lockdown and continued to maintain excellent service levels to customers.
