Morecambe forced to scale back new stadium

HIGHER development costs have forced Morecambe Football Club to shrink the size of its new ground.
Revised plans submitted to Lancaster City Council show the new stadium at Westgate will have room for 6,400 fans – 500, or 7%, fewer than originally planned.
The home and family stands will be scaled back due to “increased development costs”, according to planning documents.
In addition to the stadium the plans consist of an outdoor multi-sports area, new roads and car parking for 264 cars and eight coaches.
The development also includes a 40-bed hotel and seven food and drink outlets. This part has been covered by a separate application.
The League Two side has already sold its current ground, Christie Park, to Sainsbury’s for around £4m. The grocer wants to build a 40,000 sq ft shop on the site.
