Mills & Reeve’s Top Tech: North West revealed

The region’s most pioneering and innovative technology companies are revealed today in the Mills & Reeve Top Tech: North West.

Launched in September, in partnership with TheBusinessDesk.com, Top Tech: North West is designed to showcase the cutting-edge companies which have put the region on the map as a world-class hub for technological development and innovation.

The launch followed the success of the Mills & Reeve Top Tech: Yorkshire, which is now in its third year.

More than 75 entries were received across both sites and were judged on technological innovation, leadership, growth and financial performance, client service and delivery and community and employee engagement.

Entries were received from a diverse range of technology companies from across the North West including MedTech companies whose technologies have proved vital during the COVID-19 pandemic, and those at the forefront of robotics and artificial intelligence (AI).

Given the number of high calibre entrants, the expert panel, made up of some of the leaders in the technology sector, had the difficult task of judging the entrants.

However, after healthy debate, the entries were whittled down and 20 companies were selected for inclusion in the report, while two were highly commended.

Mills & Reeve, partner and Top Tech: North West judge, Paul Knight, said: “We launched Top Tech: North West with the aim of shining a light on the region’s innovative and cutting-edge technology companies, and we were not disappointed.

“We were presented with fascinating insights into some outstanding work being done here in the North West and many of the pioneering companies have carved out niches to become leaders in their fields.

“However, what they all had in common was their passion and resilience.

“In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, the region’s technology companies have risen to the challenge by adapting and helping their clients to adapt to new ways of working.

“They have epitomised the North West’s entrepreneurial spirit and, therefore, we are delighted to give them the recognition they deserve.”

Among those featured in the Top Tech: North West was Manchester-based Matillion. Co-founder Ed Thompson said: “Known for showcasing cutting-edge companies in Yorkshire, this year’s inaugural Mills & Reeve Top Tech: North West report expands the spotlight on technological innovation in the region. Matillion is proud to be identified as a pioneer, and for the positive impact our team and technology make by helping enterprises make sense of their data to make better business decisions.”

Also in the report is Cheadle-based Voly. Chief executive officer Ian Flanagan said: “We are delighted to be included within the inaugural Top Tech: North West.

“As one of the leading European cities for tech, Manchester has been a great base to help us rapidly build our business and we look forward to further success and growth alongside other great Northern tech businesses.”

Fellow tech entrepreneur, Jack Barmby, whose Bury-based Gnatta gained a coveted spot, added: “We’re massive advocates of talent in the North West.

“Promoting and giving exposure to the best tech firms is essential to the North West’s continued investment as a leading tech hub – to be considered one of those businesses in the region is an honour and a privilege.”

The Top Tech judging panel included: Richard Faulkner, managing director, technology banking, Silicon Valley Bank; Dr Kath Mackay, managing director of bioscience campus, Alderley Park; James Gregson, senior investment director of the Impact Fund at Palatine Private Equity; Jessica Jackson, investment director at GC Angels; Simon Thorn, managing director at Acceleris Capital; and Amul Batra, chief partnerships officer, Northcoders.
