Peel L&P buys Trafford Centre’s Barton Square

Landowner Peel L&P has acquired Trafford Centre’s Barton Square, the 350,000 sq ft retail and leisure complex which is home to Primark, Chill Factore, Legoland Discovery Centre, and Sea-Life.

Barton Square was put on the market with Savills last year with bids sought in excess of £50m.

Investor interest has been driven by the lease-up opportunity which has attracted a range of high-profile operators following Barton Square’s multimillion-pound transformation and the opening of a two-storey Primark store last year.

The centre was fully redesigned as part of the £75m revamp, gaining a glass-domed roof and more than 110,000 sq ft of extra leisure and retail space.

The value of the deal remains undisclosed.

Mark Whittaker, Peel L&P’s director of property investment and management, said: “Peel L&P’s acquisition of Barton Square brings a truly unique and exciting retail and leisure destination to our portfolio.

“Barton Square is a best in class, iconic asset forming a key part of TraffordCity’s high profile and successful portfolio of attractions including Beyond – home of Chill Factore, iFly, Trafford Golf Centre, Dino Falls Adventure Golf and David Lloyd Leisure.

“With plans submitted for a new outdoor surf park – Wave Garden, alongside Therme Resorts bringing a world class health and wellbeing resort to TraffordCity, we’re on the cusp of a transformational new phase for the UK’s foremost experiential and retail destination.”

Barton Square Ltd has run the centre since owner intu went into administration, with work under way to reinvent the centre in response to changing visitor and tenant needs.
