Beds retailer commits to Stockport with relocation to bigger premises

Bensons for Beds has today (June 25) moved to a new store in Stockport as part of the nationwide retailer’s transformation following £25m new investment a year ago.

The Accrington-based bed and mattress retailer has taken a lease on Unit 3, in what was formerly GAP, in the town’s Peel Centre on Great Portwood Street where neighbours include Boots, Dunelm, DFS, Argos and Next.

Bensons has moved a few hundred yards from its previous location on the retail park which it had shared with Harveys until June last year when Bensons became a standalone company.

At 8,500 sq ft, the new store remains one of Bensons’ largest locations and better suited to showcasing the range of beds and mattresses on offer from brands including Slumberland, iGel, Tempur and Sealy.

The move into the new store – which employs seven colleagues – is another step in the transformation of Bensons following the restructuring deal and it said the investment shows its commitment to Stockport as the town undergoes regeneration.

Bensons’ managing director for retail, Alan Williams, said: “Stockport is a great location for us and we’re looking forward to being part of the town’s exciting future in our new home at the Peel Centre.

“It will allow us to display our best ranges more effectively and make sure that customers make the right choice.”

A recent survey predicted 2021 would see property sales this year reaching levels last seen in 2007, while a separate study showed that nearly two million homeowners were thinking about moving to a home that better accommodated their needs.

Mr Williams added: “After going through a move of our own in Stockport, our colleagues are ready to help customers who are planning a house move, whether they’re moving to accommodate a bigger family or downsizing.”

The store will be run by manger Liz Gaunt who has been with the business for 15 years at stores including Manchester, Horwich and Bury.

Like all Bensons stores, the new Stockport store has a rigorous health and safety regime in place and asks customers to observe guidelines on social distancing and wearing masks.
