BUILDING firm Construction Partnership UK has won a £1.5m contract to build a new medical centre in Preston.

The Skelmersdale-based company is on site at the former DVLA building in Cottam Lane, Ashton, building the health centre for the Park Medical Group.

The construction work will include a new GP surgery, pharmacy, a minor operations room and training facilities for medical student doctors, foundation year doctors and GP registrars.

The three-storey building, which has been designed by Preston-based architecture firm the Frank Whittle Partnership, will feature solar panels on the roof, car-parking and landscaping.

Phil Nealen, associate partner at Frank Whittle Partnership, said: “We worked very closely on all aspects of the design with the doctors and practice nurses to create a facility fit for the modern NHS that would be a real asset to the community.

“We want to provide a building that will be welcoming to both the patients using it and the staff working there.”

Steve Burke, managing director of CPUK, said: “We are building a modern facility which will be of benefit to both staff and patients.

“Built into the construction is room for the practice to expand if necessary and offer patients new services.”

The Park Medical Group looks after around 4,000 registered patients. Its team of Preston-based GPs are currently working out of Ashton Health Centre in nearby Pedders Lane.

They will move into the new health centre when work completes in June 2010.
