Self-storage company boss announces new scheme, with ‘more in the pipeline’

The proposed Winsford development

A North West self-storage company is aiming to create a new facility in Winsford.

Rent-a-Space is owned by Kevin Murphy and Andrew Donaldson. They established two sites on Dunningsbridge Road, in Bootle, Liverpool, and in Shrewsbury, which they sold in multimillion-pound deals.

The Liverpool site was sold to Big Yellow Group, and rebranded as Armadillo Self-Storage. Mr Murphy said the purchaser of the Shrewsbury asset, Heitman Private Equity, has since rebranded it as Space Station.

Now, he has announced plans for a new Cheshire site, and added that there is “more in the pipeline”.

He told TheBusinessDesk.com: “My latest venture in Winsford will offer 60,000 sq ft of domestic self storage and flexible business units including offices, studios, workspace and light assembly.

“It is expected to open for trade in winter 2022.”

The site is on land at Road One, on Winsford Industrial Estate.

Outline planning permission was granted to Rula Developments, in 2019, but a reserved matters application has now been submitted to Cheshire West and Chester’s planning department.

It proposes one large storage facility, and six smaller units.

A design and access statement says: “It is envisaged the unit will be occupied by Rent-a-Space, a premium self-storage provider who predominantly offer secure storage for a range of storage needs. Part two comprises six flexible units.”

Plans include 68 parking spaces, with two for electric vehicles.
