Bolton-based Gorilla Accounting said it aims to increase in size after reaping the rewards of HMRC’s new Making Tax Digital laws.

The firm now has more than 3,300 clients and 50 members of staff after more than doubling its client base since HMRC launched Making Tax Digital in April 2019.

Gorilla launched in 2016 and in the past six years has grown 17-fold from a team of three to a workforce of more than 50 at its offices in Lynstock Way in Bolton.

Now it has announced ambitions to treble its client base to more than 10,000 clients and double headcount to more than 100 over the next five years.

Making Tax Digital means that businesses and organisations are required to maintain digital accounting records as paper records no longer meet the requirements of Britain’s tax legislation.

Since the new tax year began earlier this month every single VAT registered business in Britain has to switch to MTD a total of more than 2.77m organisations.

Gorilla is set to get another large boost in the next two years as, in April 2024, it will become law for more than four million self employed people as well as landlords to file digital tax returns

The firm specialises in handling the accounts of SMEs and well-paid self-employed professionals such as IT contractors, cyber security contractors, crypto investors, landlords, vets, pharmacists, and medical locums.

Gorilla director, Daniel Fallows, said: “We created Gorilla with a clear vision to make filing tax returns and filing company accounts, quicker, easier, less stuffy, and more transparent for the self-employed and SMEs, which is why we embraced digital so early on so we could become experts in digital accounting years before HMRC made it law.

“Our growth plans are solid, credible and sustainable. We know how many new clients we need to bring in every month to treble our client base and we have been healthily exceeding our growth plans month-on-month for a while.

“We are fully focused on delivering a better accountancy service for the self-employed and SMEs and scaling our business significantly over the next five years.”
