32 new Higher Blackley homes aimed at social rent sector

Plans for Chain Road

Manchester-based housing association, Great Places Housing Group has started work on 32 affordable homes in Higher Blackley.

The new scheme, on Chain Road, is the fourth development being delivered by Great Places’ in-house construction company, Terra Nova.

The site, previously occupied by The Lion Lamb public house, had became a hotspot for anti-social behaviour and fly-tipping. The local community was keen to support a change in use for the site.

The scheme will deliver a mix of one-bed and two-bed apartments alongside three-bed and four-bed houses, all available for social rent.

The development is ideally located with excellent access to local facilities, links to public transport and direct access to the city centre via Rochdale Road.

The £4.2m development is already coming out of the ground and is set to be completed by autumn 2023, with first handovers from late spring 2023.

Helen Spencer, executive director of growth at Great Places, said: “We’ve worked closely with Manchester City Council to ensure that the scheme aligns with their strategy to enhance the affordability prospects for future customers.

“There’s a significant need for affordable housing in Manchester – this scheme will deliver 100% social rented housing and help to address this need.

“We have designed the scheme to suit a wide range of customers, from single people to families, and look forward to welcoming new customers.”

She added: “We’re really pleased to start works on our fourth Terra Nova scheme. We are actively seeking development opportunities across the North West in order to build on our growth pipeline.

“Terra Nova will continue to work with the Great Places Affordable Development team to support ambitious growth plans and to tackle the housing crisis.”
