The owner of a Cheshire home interiors business was among several people tragically killed in a helicopter accident in Australia yesterday (January 2).

Ron Hughes, 65, and his wife of just 18 months, Diane, 57, were among four fatalities following the collision of two helicopters in Queensland.

Mr Hughes founded interior fabric designs company, Concept Interiors, on Neston High Street, Wirral, in 1992.

The business website said Mr Hughes had extensive experience, having serviced both the domestic and commercial markets.

While based in the Wirral the company, which employs six staff, also operates throughout Cheshire and North Wales and carries out special commissions in other parts of the UK.

Diane’s brother shared a public Facebook post, saying: “The family will make a statement when we are ready.

“For those who don’t know my sister and her husband where (sic) involved in the helicopter crash on the Gold Coast yesterday. We would also like to thank you all for the love and support we have received. We are truly humbled at this heartbreaking time.”

In a statement to Australian news outlet 7NEWS, Mr Hughes’ daughter, Jane Manns, said: “Our family is heartbroken and we are still trying to contact friends and family to let them know.

“Please respect our privacy at this devastating time.”

The crash happened near the Sea World resort, about 50 miles south east of Brisbane. Its cause is not yet known.

The two helicopters involved were operating tourist flights for the resort.

Its owner, Village Roadshow Theme Parks, has offered condolences and said Sea World Helicopters was an independent operator.

The UK Foreign Office said it is supporting the families of the British victims and would continue to liaise with the local authorities.
