IT specialist in acquisition deal to save data centre from closure

Manchester-based IT specialist, Lunar Digital, has acquired MA2, the Manchester facility of US group Equinix, for an undisclosed sum.

Data centre, managed cloud and cyber security solutions provider, Lunar, opened discussions regarding the purchase with Equinix after it announced the closure of MA2 in December 2021.

The acquisition of the 22,500 sq ft 3MVA – expansion plans for 4MVA – facility is highly strategic for Lunar Digital as it bolsters its data centre footprint in the UK and Europe.

Robin Garbutt, CEO of LD, said: “We’re very excited to announce that we’ve completed the acquisition of the Equinix data centre in Reynolds House.

“The acquisition will ensure client colocation capacity in the most highly demanded markets within the UK.

“The demand for premium data centre capacity in Manchester continues to be highlighted and we are proud to be playing our part in supporting its continued growth.”

Lunar Digital said it will be able to offer services immediately within the facility, providing stability and peace of mind to existing clients who had previously been informed of the site’s closure.

The facility will be rebranded as Lunar1 and Lunar2, offering highly connected, carrier-neutral and scalable data centre capabilities in the strategic and growing region of Manchester.

Lunar1 and 2 will retain the services of the strategic carriers within the site as one of the best-connected sites in the North.

Equinix is a Californian-headquartered multinational data centre operator of more than 240 data centres spanning 27 countries.
