Supermarket scheme for Halton Lea approved

HALTON Borough Council has granted planning approval for a 148,000 sq ft foodstore at Halton Lea town centre in Runcon, which could provide up to 350 new jobs.

The planning application was submitted in January this year by planning and architectural consultancy Barton Willmore on behalf of developer Ablestyle.

Approval will allow Ablestyle to develop a 3.75 hectare site, which includes the demolition of East Lane House. Outline planning consent was granted to a similar proposal for the same site back in 2008. The superstore will have a mezzanine floor, car parking, servicing area, landscaping and a petrol filling station.

Chris Wyman of Ablestyle said: “This decision releases a significant site for retail development and ensures that the current eyesore of East Lane House is demolished.

“In future, the location will significantly enhance the heart of Halton Lea as a shopping and commercial destination.”

Chris Edge, planning associate at Barton Willmore’s Manchester office, said: “These proposals will help reinforce Halton Lea as a retail destination and provide much needed inward investment.

“This will provide further choice for local people and align with the council’s wider regeneration initiatives for this part of Runcorn.

A deal with an operator for the new foodstore has yet to be agreed.
