Boost to Bolton regeneration plans as Primark agrees relocation

Market Place Bolton

Retailer Primark, Bolton Council and Market Place Bolton have confirmed the relocation of Primark to Market Place Bolton.

This is a significant step forward for Bolton on a number of levels.

Bolton Council has been wanting to move forward with the demolition of Crompton Place, where the current Primark Bolton store is situated, so this deal is a huge step forward to deliver this sooner.

Primark will now invest, alongside Moorgarth Retail, the owners of Market Place, to create a new store in the shopping centre, which will occupy the old ground floor and part of the lower ground floor of the old Debenhams.

Alison Stewart, asset manager at Moorgarth, said: “This is a massive vote of confidence in our shopping centre, it consolidates even further the retail and leisure offer in the town, will strengthen the offer and wider visitor attraction to Bolton and Market Place, and delivers a new anchor store with massive multimillion-pound investment, into Bolton town centre.”

Last year, Primark announced a £140m investment in the UK as part of its commitment to the future of the high street. The relocation of Primark Bolton marks an additional investment in its UK stores as it continues to support the growth of UK retail.

As part of the regeneration plans new residential developments have already commenced in the town centre and more developments are about to start.

Alison Stewart added: “It’s been a tumultuous time for retail leisure and hospitality sectors, I cannot express just how ecstatic I am, testament to the hard graft, grit and determination of all the parties involved, we are finally contractual.

“I am grateful to all council, Primark, Moorgarth Retail professional teams for their tenacity and commitment to seeing this through.”

Primark UK retail director, Kari Rodgers, said: “We are thrilled to be moving forward with plans to relocate our Primark Bolton store to the Market Place Centre. We know our customers will be excited to shop in the new store and we hope to give more Bolton shoppers more reasons to visit their town centre.”

Bolton Council leader, Cllr Martyn Cox, and Bolton Council director of place, Jon Dyson said: “As shopping habits change we are working to consolidate the retail offer around Market Place and create a town centre that also provides a mix of residential, hospitality and leisure.

“We continue to explore options for the future of Crompton Place and this is a significant step towards the regeneration of this part of town.”

The store is expected to open late 2024/early 2025, dependent on construction works.
