St Helens glass makers vote for strike action over pay deal

Strikes are looming at a St Helens glass maker.

Workers at glass cord manufacturer NGF Europe have voted for three strikes after more than 170 GMB union members conducted a ballot over their pay offer.

The union says they are angry that other sites in the area have been given more than the 5.65 per cent, plus an £850 non-consolidated payment on offer.

Workers at other nearby NGF sites have been given a 6.75 per cent pay rise.

The initial strike dates are:

  • From 6am on July 2, to 6am July 4.
  • From 9pm on July 8, to 9pm July 10.
  • From 9pm on July 13, to 9pm July 14.

A majority of 90% of GMB members who voted supported strike action.

Stephen Boden, GMB Organiser, said: “This industrial action is a result of NGF putting profits before its workers.

“The site is profitable with sales revenue up year-on-year. Other sites in the local area have been given more and St Helens workers are rightly angry.

“But it’s not too late for management to listen to workers and get back round the table with us to work out a fair deal.”

The company has been contacted for comment.
