BAE to axe 270 jobs in Barrow and Oldham

BAE Systems plans to axe 230 jobs at its submarine site in Barrow-in-Furness, with another 41 being lost at its Oldham site.
The majority of job losses are within its submarine construction division, follow a review by the company of current and future workload requirements, it said.
The jobs being lost at the Chadderton Military Air Solutions site are being blamed on the slow the introduction of the Nimrod MRA4. The 260 staff at Chadderton currently support the MR2.
John Hudson, managing director at BAE Systems Submarine Solutions, said: “These steps are regrettable but necessary to ensure a sustainable business, thereby allowing the company to deliver to the customer in line with their expectations of value and schedule.
“We have a responsibility to manage our cost base to remain competitive and meet our customers’ future requirements.”
BAE, which employs 5,000 staff at the Barrow site where it is constructing the Astute class of nuclear powered attack submarines, will now enter a 90 day consultation period with staff and trade unions.
Mr Hudson added: “We will work with our employees and their representatives to explore ways of mitigating these potential job losses and we will ensure employees are fully supported throughout this process.”
