Stockport unanimously approves plans for 54-apartment retirement living scheme

Plans for Davenport site

Retirement development specialist, McCarthy Stone, has been given unanimous approval by Stockport Council for a new scheme in Davenport which will provide a mix of 54 one- and two-bedroom apartments.

The proposals will see the land at Trinity Gardens transformed into a modern retirement living community, which will help to meet the need for specialist homes for older people in the area. The plans also include ample on-site car parking.

The site is situated in an accessible location, with improved pedestrian access, close to a range of shops, cafes and public transport connections.

Ahead of submitting a planning application, McCarthy Stone carried out meetings with neighbours to help inform the submitted plans.

Additionally, a public consultation with the local community regarding its proposals was held which informed the important amendments to the highways and access configuration of the final scheme, reducing the number of vehicular access points to the site from two to one in accordance with residents’ wishes.

Ciaran Aldridge, divisional managing director at McCarthy Stone North, said: “We are thrilled that our plans for new retirement living accommodation have been approved by Stockport Council.

“Our exciting plans for Davenport will help to address a critical need for retirement accommodation in the area, providing housing choice for local older people, whilst also freeing up family homes in the wider housing market for local families and first-time buyers.

“They will also help relieve pressure for the release of greenfield land for housing.”

He added: “Our residents typically use shops and services on their doorstep and, as such, this development will provide a vital boost to businesses in the area, helping to support local shops and cafes.”

Stockport Council’s Local Plan emphasises the need to meet the housing requirements of its growing ageing population. McCarthy Stone said its plans have been carefully designed with the Local Plan in mind.
