Pioneering recycling facility will improve Liverpool One waste management

Grosvenor, owner of retail centre Liverpool One, said it is introducing a pioneering new sustainability facility to boost recycling rates across the city centre retail site.
In an industry first, the installation of an innovative Mobile Segregation Unit (MSU) will help towards achieving a recycling rate of 90% of waste by 2025, significantly improving on the current rate of 41%, and 46% higher than the UK average.
Supplied by The Green Block, the MSU allows for the sorting of co-mingled waste into 15 individual waste streams instead of the current five, meaning more items will be recycled, and allowing brands a better range of recycling options for commercial waste.
The MSU also enables the digital tracking of waste which became UK law in April 2024 and mandatory by April 2025, and provides access to real time waste data via its technology system, Plaza.
The MSU has previously only been used at major transport hubs in the UK, so the launch of the Liverpool One facility marks the first of its kind at a retail-led destination and re-emphasises the destination’s long standing dedication to sustainability.
Liverpool One said it has consistently met industry standards on waste management and maintained a ‘Zero Waste to Landfill’ status.
Each year the site keeps 2,560 tonnes of waste out of landfill, efforts which will be further bolstered by the MSU.
Chris Jukes, Grosvenor’s Director of Liverpool One, said: “Liverpool One has consistently demonstrated it is at the forefront of the industry.
“The installation of the MSU is another example of Grosvenor’s pioneering approach, and will bring significant environmental and operational benefits. Grosvenor is committed to maintaining an agile and proactive approach to reaching environmental goals, and initiatives like the MSU at Liverpool One are a crucial next step in contributing to a greener, healthier future.”
Josh Katz, General Manager of the MSU division at The Green Block (TGB), said: “At TGB we are committed to delivering safe and sustainable solutions. The arrival of the MSU will increase waste recycling rates and reduce carbon emissions backed by data-driven reporting.”
The new MSU is the latest in a series of commercial sustainability initiatives undertaken by Liverpool One since opening, including the installation of solar panels, 80,000 bees being housed on the roof, and two ‘bug hotels’ on Chavasse Park to encourage biodiversity.
Chavasse Park is also consistently awarded the Green Flag award for being one of the UK’s best maintained green spaces.
