Bold, industrious, friendly, Lori Hoinkes on Manchester

Lori Hoinkes event at Fieldfisher

When Lori Hoinkes took the helm at Manchester Central a year ago, she brought with her a unique blend of engineering prowess and business acumen that’s set to transform the city’s premier events venue. With a career spanning military service in the Royal Canadian Airforce, manufacturing, and tech start-ups, Hoinkes has found what seems to be her true calling in the dynamic world of live events.

As part of our regular interview series with law firm Fieldfisher, she explained how her journey to Manchester came about, via Rotherham and London.

“I immediately fell in love with Manchester,” Hoinkes recalls of her first visit to the city.

Under Hoinkes’ leadership, Manchester Central is exploring innovative ways to host larger events by collaborating with other venues to create a “campus offer.” This approach aims to position Manchester itself as player on the global stage for major conferences and exhibitions.

Hoinkes is also keen to leverage Manchester’s rich academic landscape. “Universities play a crucial role in attracting international associations and influencing global events,” she explained.

One of her most exciting long term dreams is the potential creation of a homegrown exhibition that achieves for Manchester’s creative industries what SXSW has done for Austin Texas.

“We have an opportunity to really showcase what Manchester is great at,” she enthuses. This event could become a cornerstone in Manchester Central’s calendar, drawing attention to the city’s innovative spirit.

The recent opening of Junction, a new public facility at Manchester Central, exemplifies her commitment to enhancing visitor experiences. This space is set to become a hub for VIP experiences and flexible workspaces, further cementing Manchester Central’s role in the city’s business ecosystem.

In the quick fire round she was asked to give three words that summed up Manchester. “Bold, industrious, and friendly.”
