Approval for expansion of Moxy Manchester Hotel, creating extra 54 rooms

Proposed extension to Moxy Manchester

Manchester City Council planning committee has approved plans by KE Hotels to expand Moxy Manchester, increasing the hotel’s capacity in response to growing demand in Spinningfields

The plans will see the Atkinson Street building extended by three storeys, adding 54 bedrooms and boosting the hotel’s total room count from 146 to 200.

The expansion aligns with Manchester’s continued growth as a leading business and leisure destination, with the additional rooms supporting increased visitor demand in Spinningfields, further strengthening the city’s hospitality sector.

The works include removing the existing top storey, constructing three new floors, and reinstating the original top storey above.

Designed by ICA and submitted by planning consultant Ashton Hale, the extension will maintain the hotel’s modern aesthetic and align with previous planning approvals.

The development will deliver significant economic and employment benefits, including an estimated 108 jobs during construction and 10 new full-time equivalent (FTE) positions within the hotel, bringing the total hotel workforce to 85 staff, increased investment in the local area during construction and greater contributions to Manchester’s city centre economy and the additional rooms will be in a prime location that contributes to Spinningfields’ ongoing regeneration.

The project also includes improved sustainable transport options, with three additional cycle spaces to accommodate a total of 20, accessible via Tivoli Street.

Anil Khanna, managing director of KE Hotels said: “We are thrilled to receive planning consent for our proposed development of Moxy Manchester, which continues to see strong demand for guests seeking excellent hote. This expansion at Moxy Manchester will allow us to provide for more visitors while contributing positively to the city’s economy and job market.”

Moxy Manchester is operated by KE Hotels, with Moxy as a brand under Marriott International.

The expansion of the hotel, which opened in November 2021, represents another milestone in Manchester’s hospitality and tourism growth, reinforcing the city’s reputation as a premier UK destination for business and leisure.
