Cowgills embarks on acquisition trail, backed by Sumer Group support

Bolton-based accountancy firm, Cowgills, has acquired Wigan-based practice NRB, for an undisclosed sum.
Cowgills, which became part of the private equity-backed Sumer Group in February 2024, said the deal will strengthen its presence in the North West and support its ambitious 25% growth target for the year.
The acquisition provides Cowgills with a Wigan office, adding to its existing locations in Bolton, Manchester, and Liverpool, and increasing its team from 220 to 250 professionals.
Founded in 1948 by Norman Richard Barton, NRB has been a cornerstone of the Wigan business community for more than 75 years, offering accounting, taxation, and business advisory services.
NRB has developed particular expertise in digital technology solutions to support its clients.
Cowgills gained Sumer’s backing a year ago to execute an ambitious acquisition strategy, focusing on firms that align with its entrepreneurial ethos and dynamic culture.
Paul Stringer, Cowgills managing partner, said:”We’ve been highly selective in choosing firms that share our values and culture – ones that will truly benefit and enhance our business.
“The team at NRB embodies everything we stand for, and their expertise will be a tremendous asset strengthening our presence in Wigan and Lancashire. Their knowledge in digital technology also presents exciting new opportunities for our clients and our firm.”
NRB’s Catherine Rogers said: “Having been established in Wigan for over 75 years, our priority was ensuring any merger was with a firm that our team and clients could trust completely.
“We have known the team at Cowgills for many years and are thrilled to be joining forces with a firm that shares our values and commitment to exceptional client service.
“This partnership marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter, enabling us to continue delivering leading advice while unlocking new opportunities for our clients.”
Cowgills was advised by Dickson Minto and NRB, Forbes Solicitors.
