McCall takes flight from GMG to easyJet

THE head of Guardian Media Group (GMG) – publisher of the Manchester Evening News – is leaving to take over as chief executive of low-cost airline easyJet.

Carolyn McCall will replace the company’s current chief executive Andy Harrison who is due to leave the company in June.

One of Ms McCall’s last acts at GMG was to sell part of the media group’s regional publishing business – including the MEN – to Trinity Mirror for £44.8m.

The deal is expected to be concluded in the next few weeks.

Her new role will mean that she is one of only a handful of female chief executives of a large airline in the world.

She was appointed chief executive of GMG and chair of Guardian News and Media in August 2006.

Ms McCall was first appointed to the GMG Board in 2000, having served on the GNM Board since 1995, and became its chief executive in 2000.

It is understood that Mr Harrison will become the chief executive of Whitbread’s later this year.
