ENER-G works on one of UK’s greenest hospitals

A RENEWABLE energy specialist based in Salford is installing state-of-the-art power systems in one of the greenest new hospitals in the country.

ENER-G is manufacturing a combined heat and power (CHP) system for the Malvern Community Hospital as well as a ground source heat pump which harnesses solar energy absorbed by the earth.

These two systems will work together to improve energy efficiency in the 24-bed hospital while also meeting a significant proportion of its electricity, heating, hot water and cooling needs.

The new power systems are set to cut the hospital’s carbon emissions by 15 tonnes per year while slashing its energy costs.

ENER-G was set an eco-friendly design brief by Interserve which is contracted by Worcestershire Primary Care Trust to build the £17.7m hospital.

CHP uses the heat that is wasted in conventional power generation to cut carbon emissions by around 20%.

The NHS is responsible for approximately 3% of England’s total carbon dioxide emissions and has an annual energy bill of over £500m.
