HOW advises on historic airfield scheme

A Manchester planning specialist has been hired to work on plans to restore an airfield control tower that played an important role in the air campaign of the Second World War.

How Planning is advising London-based developer Liberty Property Trust UK on its £5m plans to complete a central area at its Kings Hill business park in Kent on the site of RAF West Malling.

As part of the plans Liberty is considering a visitor centre in the control tower, which is now a listed building.

HOW said it had previously been involved with a number of applications involving historical and listed buildings and will bring this knowledge to the project.

Jon Suckley of HOW Planning said: “We look forward to working with Liberty Property Trust UK on its development. Their decision to choose a Manchester-based agency for a scheme in Kent proves that it is the level of expertise and quality of service that is important in delivering schemes such as this.”

RAF West Malling suffered several bombing raids during the war and was not fully operational during the Battle of Britain. But it did play an active part in the later stages of the air campaign as part of fighter command.

The airfield was also used as a set for The Beatles 1967 film, Magical Mystery Tour.
