Appointments: Begbies swoops for Vantis team; New MD for Ocon Construction, and more…

MANCHESTER-based accountancy group Begbies Traynor has expanded its London tax office after taking on seven staff from Vantis, which is in administration.

Don Mavin will become managing partner of the enlarged London BTG Tax business, responsible for the development of the tax practice in the South East.

Mr Mavin was formerly national head of the tax disputes and litigation group at Vantis.

He is joined by his customs investigation and litigation team which includes directors Allan Brown and Martin O’Neill, and consultants Simon Sutcliffe and Ian Manly. Peter Fairchild, also joins from Vantis as a partner, providing private client tax advice.

Executive chairman Ric Traynor said: “Their addition represents a significant expansion of our London tax business and we look forward to supporting their successful integration, providing a strong platform from which to further develop BTG Tax.”

OCON Construction has appointed Andrew Barker as its new managing director.

Mr Barker, who has 20 years’ experience in construction management, succeeds Clive Williamson, who over the last three years has grown Ocon – a part of  Manchester-based Opal Property Group -to £80m turnover.

Mr Barker, who joined Ocon in February 2009, said: “Ocon has completed an enviable portfolio of student accommodation and academic schemes since being established in 2004 and we will continue to build on this success.

“However, we also have an enviable track record of  commercial schemes, including the £27m Piccadilly Gate scheme on which I was project manager, and we will increase our involvement with this type of scheme going forward.”

STEPHENSONS – the independent, family-run catering equipment supplier – has appointed Jamie Murphy, as public sector account manager.

Mr Murphy joins Stockport-basd Stephensons from Manchester City Council where he was area catering manager.

He said: “This is a great move forward in my career and I am delighted to be working with Stephensons. The company has an amazing heritage, continues to be family-run, and is very driven and ambitious.”

Alongside its public sector work, Stockport-based Stephensons also supplies some of the biggest names within the region’s bar and restaurant industry – including the Individual Restaurant Company (including Restaurant Bar & Grill and Piccolino), Felicinis, Robinsons and JW Lees.

NORTH Manchester-based financial services firm, Samuels Financial, has rebranded and appointed two new staff members.

The company, formerly Stephen Samuels Wealth Management, has appointed Alex Samuels – son of founder Stephen – as an new advisor and Colin Tomlinson who joins as the firm’s financial services office manager.
