Business mentors sought

NORTH West business start-up organisation Blue Orchid is looking to recruit entrepreneurs to volunteer to drive enterprise in the region.

The Get Monitoring programme is a public-private sector funded grant assisted by the Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS) and led by the UK Sector Skills Body for Enterprise (SFEDI).

Karen McKean, of Blue Orchid, said: “We are looking for experienced business owners and professionals from any industry background. The scheme is an opportunity to help support local businesses grow and develop.

“The benefits are two-way – businesses get valuable support, whilst mentors are able to give something back, enhancing their own skills and professional development. Giving just an hour a month can go a long way in unlocking talent and helping a business grow.”

Blue Orchid has recently recruited a Leigh fashion entrepreneur to help mentor start-up businesses in Wigan.

Mandy Summerscales, who set up retail outlet Fashion PA on Bradshawgate with help from the organisation in 2010, has joined the Get Mentoring scheme.

Mandy said: “When I first started out in business, Blue Orchid helped me with important areas such as business planning, banking, loans and grants, finance and the law. Blue Orchid was fantastic in helping develop the business idea and make it a reality.

“I feel very passionate about supporting new businesses which are in the same situation as I was in when first starting out.”
