Co-op announces more backoffice cuts

THE Co-operative has announced that it is to cut 187 backoffice jobs in its financial services division.

The group has said that the bulk of the cuts – around 130 – would take place at the headquarters of the Britannia Building Society at Leek in Staffordshire with which which it merged in 2009.
Some 53 jobs will also go at the Co-operative’s HQ in Manchester and four at its Skelmersdale branch north of Liverpool.

It said the cuts were taking place as part of “an overall business review” incorporating its change and IT roles.

In a statement, the Co-operative said: “We will be working hard with impacted colleagues to offer ongoing support which includes redeployment options within the Bank and its parent company The Co-operative Group.”

Last month, the Co-operative confirmed that up to 250 headoffice positions were under threat at its Food business.
