‘Never give up’ says Trunki inventor

INVENTOR Rob Law, who six years ago was snubbed by the millionaire experts on Dragons’ Den when he sough investment, will be sharing the secrets of his success at a major event for SMEs this week.

Mr Law, whose ride-on children’s luggage product, the Trunki, was dismissed as “worthless” on the show, is one of a number of major speakers at the Business North West event at Manchester Central on Tuesday and Wednesday.

After refining his product following his Dragons’ Den dressing-down, Mr Law’s Trunki is now a big success. It is estimated that 10% of Britain’s three to six-year-olds own a Trunki, and more than one million units have now been sold.  His business, Magmatic, is turning over £6m a year.

He is currently working on plans to bring production back to the UK.

At the Business North West he will share his expertise and advice with business owners from around the region, on how to turn setbacks into success.

Speaking ahead of the event, he said: “Having belief in your business idea is key to getting through the challenges and knock-backs. My career is testament that if you keep persevering, it will pay off.

“I’m really looking forward to having the opportunity to talk about my experience with business leaders in the North West and hopefully inspire people to keep the entrepreneurial spirit of Britain high.”

Matt Benyon, managing director of easyFairs, which operates Business North West said: “Not many people can claim a comeback as big as Rob’s – he is a real inspiration to many. Its very difficult for startups to get funding and support these days, but a story like Rob’s should give them the ammunition to maintain optimism.”
